Els codis morfològics són de cinc dígits numèrics, els quatre primers identifiquen la histologia i el cinquè el comportament. Els valors de la histologia van de M-8000 a M-9993 a la ICD-O-3.2 i els del comportament són 0: benigne; 1: incert si és benigne o maligne; 2: in situ; 3: maligne, localització primària; 6: maligne, localització metastàtica; 9: maligne, incert si és primari o metastàtic.[2] El software ASEDAT proposa una morfologia per a cada tumor, que es pot modificar manualment.

A Catalunya, els laboratoris de patologia codifiquen els tumors amb la terminologia SNOMED CT (en anglès: Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine -Clinical Terms)[3] i amb les codificacions proposades per la sèrie WHO Blue Books (en anglès: World Health Organization's International Histological of Tumors Series).[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17] Aquests codis estan disponibles als laboratoris d’Anatomia patològica mitjançant l’extensió catalana de SNOMED CT.[18][19][20] Els codis de l’extensió catalana es mostren a l’annex 1.
